Student Profile - Madelaine Wilson

How would I sum up Harper Adams? The best experience of my life.

Q&A

Madelaine Wilson, known as Maddie, is in the second year of a BSc (Hons) degree in Agricultural Engineering with Marketing and Management. The 20-year-old, from Clwyd, Wales, took a gap year before university, doing voluntary and paid work in Thailand.

Why did you choose Harper Adams?

I looked around the university on an open day and just knew it was the place I wanted to be at. Being in the countryside was a major bonus and being in a smaller student body you get to know your tutors and lectures well so feel happy to go and ask them for help.

Why did you choose your course?

The course is unique and I love the fact that we get hands on practical learning as well as the theory. These practical skills sessions give Harper Adams students the leg up which is needed when applying for jobs.

What do you enjoy most?

The hands on experience and the fact that I get to do marketing and management as part of the course too. It gives me a broader range of skills and experiences to take with me to placement and after graduation.

What projects have you worked on so far?

Designing and making an automated harvester.

We had to design and make the harvester from scratch, compiling a design specification and then sticking to it. It was very valuable experience as it gave me an insight into what I could do on my placement or as a future job.

What are your career plans?

I aim to go into the marketing and sales area of one of the international engineering companies such as John Deere or JCB.

How do you think your qualification will help in your career?

There are a number of unique modules which will make me stand out more to an employer. Along with the practical experience which we get, the fact that the agricultural engineering course is unique also makes us stand out from the crowd.

What’s your opinion of the teaching you receive?

The lecturers are approachable and very easy to get along with. They’re always happy to help when there is a problem with work. My favourite is Tom Underhill because he has always made the subject which he lectures in easy to understand. He has also been a huge help with assignments I have been struggling with in the past, as well as just being approachable whenever there has been any form of problem.

What do you think of the facilities?

Amazing. The engineering facilities are one of a kind. The covered soil hall and new Agricultural Engineering Innovation Centre have many unique facilities, and the sports facilities are great.

How do you spend your spare time?

The social life here is great fun, having a fancy dress theme every Wednesday and then being able to go out for a quiet drink in one of the pubs is a bonus too. I am a member of the women’s rugby team. We train every Monday and have a match most Wednesdays. I am also a student ambassador which involves me helping out with events which are happening on campus.

Have you gained any additional skills?

I passed my Class 2 HGV driving test in the summer of 2013, and gained my LANTRA telehandler and tractor qualifications.

How would you sum up Harper Adams?

The best experience of my life.
